It’s fall and it’s another year of acorns dropping from the trees in large numbers! Some people believe that natural forecasters, such as acorn production, can be an accurate way to predict the seasons. Did you know that trees such as oaks have something called “mast years” where they will communicate to each other via chemical signals so that all the oak trees in an area produce a large crop of nuts at the same time. This is thought to be a survival trait when predators (acorn eaters or humans cutting down trees) are in large numbers and the trees overproduce their seeds to increase the chances of being sown.
My dogs don’t really care about that geeky tree stuff, but they do love acorn season! They have become professional collectors of these nuts which they bring indoors all fall and chew up into pieces around the house. Click to watch below to find out if acorns are safe for pets.
